Greetings. My name is Lee Jaemyung, and I serve as the Governor of Gyeonggi Province in the Republic of Korea.
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all the online attendees from home and abroad for participating in the '2021 Korea Basic Income Fair,' an event which has grown to become the largest venue for public discussion on basic income.
These days, basic income has emerged as a new alternative in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Influential leaders both in Korea and around the world - including Pope Francis, the heads of international organizations such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and renowned CEOs and scholars - are discussing basic income and inclusive growth.
As the basic income and local currency policies driven by Gyeonggi Province have delivered empirical effects in overcoming demand contraction and local economic disruption brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, these initiatives are garnering attention and advancing as practical policies, moving beyond mere concepts to become reality.
COVID-19 has accelerated the changes that the Fourth Industrial Revolution would bring about. These days, neighborhood small businesses communities, backbones of job creation, would be unable to survive without the utilization of online platforms.
In this regard, we need to redefine the fairness of the online platforms available to all. Moreover, it is time for us to consider new ideas, such as providing youths - our future leaders - with living spaces, and to turn these ideas into practices.
If you dream alone, it remains just a dream. If, however, we dream together, it can become reality.
The competitiveness and dynamics of the nation as a whole, not only of the province, can be revitalized only when basic economic rights are guaranteed for all members of society, and when social fairness is restored through the avoidance of monopolies, privileges and expediencies enjoyed by only a few.
Accordingly, I would like to call for the creation of 'a world where everyone can enjoy substantial freedom and prosper together based on equality' while respecting human dignity as 'Humans Humanely.'
